In yesterdays blog I mentioned gobble, a new dining concept. Today I read about another dining concept which has been around for years but I was not aware of it, the kilo restaurant discussed below. It is definitely interesting to see new concepts coming to the market, some more interesting than others, some more likely to survive than others.

Today I read about another concept and this one seems more interesting - self-service or "kilo" restaurant. The concept is quite simple – you select what you want to eat from a buffet and pay according to the weight of the food you selected.

This is quite similar to purchasing prepared food from supermarkets, however I have never heard of a restaurant offering this service. To me it makes sense. You pay for what you select. If you are not in the mood of eating a lot select a small portion. This saves you money and avoids wastage (or overeating). There are some downsides of course. It will not be interesting for restaurants if customer select small portions and occupy seats which could be taken by customers more willing to part with a larger amount of money.

Kilo restaurants are thriving in Sao Paulo and even high end outlets are catching on to this concept. I won’t be surprised to see this concept being exported to other parts of the world.

  2. I haven't heard of a kilo restaurant before, but some of the cafes near my office have salads and you pay by the weight. Interesting concept for a restaurant. I also loved Mary's pizza photo!

  4. Oh I miss eating Herring in Japan...I don't think I ever find Herring in the local regular supermarket in the US. Fish selection is so limited here. I like Mary's pizza too! :-)

  5. I must taste baked herring one day! It looks yummy. I love herring in oil, in vinegar and vinegared in every possible sauce. I am wondering what it tastes like fresh... I see it quite often at my fishmonger's (but strangely not now).
A very interesting kilo restaurants concept, but I am sure I saw it somewhere (it was in a normal restaurant, but they weighed your fish before serving) and it made me angry: you never knew how much you paid (unless it's self-service and you weigh it yourself).

  8. Only paying for what you're going to eat makes perfect sense. I ate at a hospital cafeteria a couple of months ago, and this is what they did for salads. Hopefully the rest of the food industry will latch on to the concept as well. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Nami: herring will come. Its really healthy and underappreciated, once the media and public catch up it will come, don't worry
Sissi: it tastes delicious, fresh and frozen. I don't see do much around also, out of season I guess.
