Wieprzowina W Smietanie/Pork Chops with Sour Cream |
This is a Polish dish. I was a bit hesitant to try this. Pork with sour
cream does not sound to appealing. But strangely it works really well. The
sugar balances the acidity quite well and the braising liquid, albeit very
little, adds lot of flavour to sour cream. The recipe is available here.

Make A Difference Insurance, an Australian life
insurance company, is offering discounts of up to 20 per cent on premiums for vegetarians.
According to the company, vegetarians are
healthier than meat-eaters so they should be offered cheaper life insurance. "There
is growing … evidence that suggests vegetarians have a lower risk of serious
illnesses such as heart disease, hypertension, cancer, obesity, strokes,
osteoporosis, diabetes and kidney disease,'' the Managing Director Mr Brian Jones said.
The Dietitians Association of Australia responded
by saying that “there was not a one-size-fits-all approach. As a dietitian, I
can't say that someone is guaranteed to be healthier if they don't eat meat. "They
might eat more doughnuts, potato chips and drink soft drinks. You would need to
look at the whole dietary intake.'' The spokesperson for the Association went
on to state that “research suggested there were health benefits to being
vegetarian, but not that they lived longer. A study in an American journal
showed vegetarians are less likely to die of a heart attack, but they still had
the same rates of mortality and life span as meat-eaters.''
So while vegetarians may not live longer, at least they will die a bit richer due to cheaper food and lower insurance premium.
Your pork looks excellent, but I have never heard about it. When I made a search on Polish paged it appeared only as a Belrussian specialty... otherwise it's only on American websites in English. I think it might be a regional stuff unknown in the rest of Poland and probably made popular in the US by some immigrants from this region. It doesn't change the fact that it must be delicious!
ReplyDeleteI've seen a number of Polish sites having this recipe and also read somewhere that its a regional recipe. Maybe from a part of Poland close to Belarus?
DeleteWhen you google it, all the Polish websites which contain the name mention it as a Belorussian recipe. Frankly I only guess it must be also a regional Polish specialty but from websites in English... No trace in Polish other than mentioning it as a Belorussian dish. But maybe I didn't look hard enough.
ReplyDeleteEnglish sites say its a Polish dish while Polish sites say its a Belorussian dish. I wonder what Belorussian sites say:)
DeleteHaha! We should check it ;-)
DeleteI thin the pork with sour cream combo sounds great, same idea as stroganoff a bit. That veg cheaper insurance is just silly. Do they refuse to pay up if you do die of a more 'meat-eater' related cause?
ReplyDeleteI still love my meat even I get a higher insurance bill :)
