Japan will open a futuristic robot farm in the tsunami disaster zone. The farm will involve unmanned tractors working on a 600 acre disaster zone site. Robots will then box produce grown on the farm, including rice, wheat, soybeans, fruit and vegetables as part of the “Dream Project” scheme, according to the Nikkei.
The growth of crops will also be boosted by recycled carbon dioxide generated by the operation of the machinery in a bid to reduce reliance on chemical fertilisers.
On-site research is expected to begin later this year, with a forecast government investment of £33 million (four billion yen) over the next six years, according to ministry officials.
More than 59,000 acres of once fertile farmland were damaged as a result of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear fallout, with the agricultural industry still struggling to recover.
It is great to see Japan not accepting defeat but taking active steps to bring back normality. However I really wonder how the product will be received by consumers. I am sure extensive research will be done to ensure the safety of the products, however there is a psychological issue as well.

ReplyDeleteAbout Japan... it's tough and depressing. There are so many agricultural lands in the area where all the produce couldn't be eaten because of radiation. All the farmers and everyone lost job. Everyone outside the area trying to buy crops and produce from other areas... Mentally it's really difficult and tiring to check every source to make sure the safety, assuming that everything is already checked. But still there are some cases that people find radiation in some food etc. As a mom, it's already stressful thinking about it...and I hope things will get better soon...

ReplyDeleteLike Nami I would be concerned with the safety of the food. I do think it is great Japan is trying t make best of a bad situation but at what cost should the produce be contaminated. Also this has a sci-fi feel to it with robots taking over.

ReplyDeleteJapan is one nation I shall bow to lower than they can bow. Instead of whining and moaning about the tragedy, they pulled up their trousers and went headlong into bigger and better things.

ReplyDeleteI thought the zone close to nuclear accidents was irradiated for dozens of years... How can they produce anything edible there? This project sounds strange.
Robotic farming is such an interesting concept. I hope it works out for them. Japan could use a break. Your stew looks yummy!!

I thought so too, I wonder how they will solve the radiation issue. Chernobyl is still closed but the problem there was much bigger. I am sure the scientists have some tricks up their sleeves. Lets hope they will eat the food themselves also
