What Makes You Fat and Kokos Toscatårta

Swedish Almond Coconut Cake (Kokos Toscatårta)
Food Diary (February 26, 2012)
Breakfast: Sourdough toast
Lunch: Pasta salad
Dinner: Sourdough toast with spinach and lentils

This is the coconut version of the toscatårta or Swedish almond cake that I made earlier. In case you haven’t tried toscatårta it is a delicious cake with an almond sugar topping.

To make the crunchy topping, half way through the baking process a buttery sugary almond coconut mixture is spread over the cake. The cake is baked until the top turns golden, crunchy and delicious. After you spread the topping and the cake goes back in the oven take a look when the mixture starts to bubble. It is a beautiful sight! You don't see cakes bubbling very often.

I wouldn’t go to the extent of saying this is the most delicious cake in the world because I haven’t tried every cake in the world. But it is very delicious. The recipe is available here.

An interesting list of items that make you fat! It may look like the joke but its not. Every item is justified, they seem plausible though in some cases immaterial. Nevertheless its interesting reading.

Air Conditioner
Apparently the fact that your body doesn’t have to work to cool down during the hot summer months, since the AC is doing the work for you, is making you gain weight.

This one has some logic perhaps. Without aircon you would sweat more and perhaps lose your appetite. We tend to avoid fatty foods when its hot.

Stilettos
Apparently wearing casual, comfortable shoes every day can help you burn up to 6,500 more calories per year. That works out to be about 125 calories per week. A regular sized snickers bar (59 grams) has 280 calories. If you presently wear high heels, you can switch to regular shoes and have half a snicker bar a week, guilt free!

Husband's Education
A "study" showed that women who married men with a higher level of schooling than them tended to be more fit, while women who did the opposite tended to be heavier.

This one is tricky. You can turn off the aircon, get rid of the stilettos but replacing a husband for a higher educated one or forcing your husband to go back to school is easier said than done.

Being Afraid of the Dark
Sleeping with the lights on (either from the actual light, TV, or computer) is believed to cause more weight gain than if you slept in the dark.

Leggings
Leggings are potentially the cause of flabby thighs. It appears that the fact that they "hold everything in" allows your muscles to slack off, meaning they become weaker and, thus, flabbier.

Your Mother
Apparently studies have shown that those who don’t get along as well with their mothers are twice as likely to be overweight and/or obese.

I wonder how this works. If you don’t get along well, does it mean you eat more in sorrow, or happiness? If your mums a baker it means you forgo a supply of sweets, or does it mean you get more since your mum is trying to bribe you? Either way, its good to be on good terms with your mum, irrespective of what it does to your weight.

  2. Those are really interesting. I suppose it is good for me that my husband is working on his Master's Degree now.

  3. Wahahahahahaha!!! That list really cracked me up esp the one that blames the mum! (apparently having a good laugh helps lose weight too!) :D

    1. Oh yeah, the golden topping of your watchamacallit is lovely! Love toasted almonds ... sounds seriously sweet tho. But I guess the sugar gives it the crunch.

    2. Blame the mother or someone else, its always the easy way out:) I guess having a laugh would help lose weight, and more effective if the aircon is off, no leggings and an educated husband:)
That watchamacallit things wasn't that sweet, its moderately sweet. I reduced the amount of sugar in the cake and the topping has just 75ml sugar. The crunch mainly comes from the almonds, not sugar since its mixed with milk.

    3. I take my comment back about sugar not providing crunch. Just had a small slice of a frozen cake, definitely crunch from the sugar

  4. I do like the sound of a bubbling cake. What interesting revelations in that post. I'd better throw out all my leggings, be grateful I've married someone with higher education, start getting on with my mother and wearing comfortable shoes. There's always so much to do!

  5. Some of those items on the list sound quite suspect but a couple sound like they could be plausible!

    1. Some do sound suspect, but I guess its the result of data mining

  6. The cake looks delicious indeed and I must test it very soon (my husband loves both coconut and almonds, but I never pair them!).
The list sounds so obvious, but so surprising at the same time! I love walking around my city and never take a tram for less than three stops. Of course if I wore stilettos I wouldn't be able to walk even one tram stop. The air conditioner makes me understand why I get hungrier at the office than at home. My husband has the same education level, so it should be ok I guess. As for the mother, it depends if she is a good cook and lives nearby (and of course how she cooks: light or not, but usually mothers don't cook as light as we do...). If both are true and relations are great, then it will certainly make many people fat ;-)

    1. I haven't seen coconut and almonds paired, don't know why.
The list is obvious and surprising for sure. Things we probably don't think of until we read about it.
Most mothers that I know of don't cook light. My mum cooks light but I live far away so she has no influence on my weight:) And I think this list is targeted at woman, mostly, since stilettos, leggings etc are mentioned!

    1. Just eat coconut while sitting in a room without aircon, it might be OK:)

  8. ah cool coconut almond toping, which bubbles in the oven. It is vaguely familiar, the sight of bubbling cake toppings...

Wow the pear mousse with the choco leaves looks realy breathtaking. what a great idea!

I agree, to those items make u fat. whener one feels too comfortable we humans tend to take it too easy in life and cant stop. I have seen ACs here changing some people from normal to huge balls. not pretty at all.

thanks for sharing all those interessting things. =)

hpe u had a nice weekend!

I had to laugh at some of the things on that list...although quite a few are definitely true!

  10. hahahaha these are hilarious, but somehow a little bit true. i never realized it, but we do tend to avoid fatty foods when it is hot. comfort food is eaten in cold weather! and the part about the husband's education being higher will have wives that are more fit? that one, i don't get it. lol.

  12. Your Swedish Almond Coconut Cake lo0ok yummy, love these types of cakes. As for the list...wow there are some doozies here. The leggings make sense because they make me think of my mom...from the older generation...who has worn a girdle to this day, her muscles are done there.

  13. Great looking cake! Some of these statistics make a lot more sense than others...but I think eating too much makes you a lot heavier than wearing stilettos :)

    1. Thank you. I guess in that case one stops wearing stilettos and according to the article this shaves off some calories!

  16. Mmmm coconut cake. Does that make you fat?

Funny about the leggings - they are selling those super tight ones here that supposedly help you tone up. Might all be a fad since it's on the tv shopping network... :-/
