Free chicken and squid sausage

Food Diary (March 28, 2012)
Breakfast: Rolled oats with banana, sunflower seeds and flax seeds
Dinner: Lentils, salad, bread
Baking/sweets: chocolate, flax seed oat crackers

It is really exciting to see other bloggers posting dishes that you just ate, or planned to eat. This does not happen very often, even though there are 7 billion people in the world. Not all of them blog, and we don't visit every food blog. I don't know the odds of seeing similarities but I suppose it is much less than the odds of winning lotto. I say this because it happened twice today and few times previously. On the other hand I have never won lotto. I guess the fact that I don’t buy tickets probably reduces the probability of me winning.

For lunch today I had tuna and carrot and it’s not a very common combination. Sissi posted a recipe for carrot and canned tuna salad today. The lentils I had for dinner was very similar to what Joanne posted. Such little things excite me. I should be worried.

The saying ‘there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ is not always applicable, especially if you live in the village of Pince in north-western France.

Officials in the village proposed giving two chickens to each household in order to cut down on organic waste. The chickens should each consume 150kg (330lb) of rubbish per year. It is hoped that as well as reducing waste, the chickens will provide eggs.

So far between 15 and 20 households are believed to have shown interest and they will receive their chickens in September.

This idea to give away chickens started off as a joke and then it was realized that its actually a good idea.

The less honest households could accept the offer and eat the chicken. From a financial perspective it makes sense to keep the chicken and get two eggs everyday but I suppose maintaining chicken can be a hassle. Nevertheless an interesting concept, and no doubt the egg producers will not be very pleased with this.

  3. You're right about tuna and carrot not being a common combination. I've only heard of it from Harumi Kurihara's cookbook which I have and sure enough, Sissi's recipe was an adaptation of her's! :)

    1. Actually it was an adaptation of an adaptation by Azusa ;-) (I have cited both in my post). I have only one book by H. Kurihara but without this salad...

  4. That is a very interesting concept with the chickens. I have friends with chickens and they feed them all their scraps and it certainly reduces their waste. Our generation is so wasteful compared with a few generations ago and I think we should go back to how our grandparents lived and (where possible) grow our own fruits, vegetables and keep chickens for eggs. That sausage looks very interesting and nothing like what I see in my butcher's window xx

    1. Feed scraps and get eggs in return. Not a bad deal at all, except for the chicken maintenance bit. But if they get too annoying you just eat them!

  5. Nah, no need to be worried. You just need to get more hobbies :)
    That squid sausage looks good, in an arty-farty sort of way. I'm not a fan of squid ink. Had squid ink pasta in Italy and it was just eh.
    Chickens eat rubbish? I'd say give them a couple of goats. They'll eat all the tin cans and litter away ... serious rubbish.

  6. Your tuna puff looks excellent, I really must make it one day! I think such situations are simply magical and it always makes me happy (so maybe I should be worried? no!!! I don't think so). The same food preference mood between bloggers ;-) Thanks for the link :-)
    The squid sausage looks very appetising! (I'm not joking, I love squid and even the black colour doesn't scare me).
    The chicken idea is excellent; but I'm sure some people might eat them shortly after they receive the chickens... Maybe goats would be a better choice? Many people don't like goat meat.

    1. Don't be worried, not now, unless it starts to happen everyday:)
      The downside with goats is that they don't lay as many eggs as chicken so the households don't get much in return!
