Great news, for man.  Beer makes man smarter, according to researchers at the University of Illinois in Chicago. They found that men were better at solving brain teasers after having a couple beers.

In a test, researchers devised a bar game in which 40 men were given three words and told to come up with a fourth that fits the pattern. Half of the lucky players received two pints while the other half got no drinks. The group that got 2 beers solved 40% more of the problems that their sober counterparts. They also managed to finish the game in 12 seconds, compared with 15.5 seconds that the non-drinkers took.

“We found at 0.07 blood alcohol, people were worse at working memory tasks, but they were better at creative problem-solving tasks,” psychologist Jennifer Wiley reported on the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) site.

“We have this assumption, that being able to focus on one part of a problem or having a lot of expertise is better for problem solving,” says Wiley. “But that’s not necessarily true. Innovation may happen when people are not so focused. Sometimes it’s good to be distracted.” It may also help explain why raving drunks like Ernest Hemingway, John Cheever or Charles Bukowski were able to write their books.

Man's decision to make and drink beer is a smart move in itself. And drinking makes them smarter. I don't think many men will be complaining with this research findings. It would of course be interesting to see whether the findings apply to woman.

  1. This is why I don't believe the research results unless I read the detailed conditions. The other group not only didn't have beer, but no other alcohol! Everyone knows we work better intellectually when we feel well, relaxed and what is better than a glass of beer or wine? Do they have to make "scientific" research to come to such an obvious conclusion?
It would be more interesting if they compared beer and wine, beer vs vodka etc.!

    1. I take your word for it. Men are smart even without beer, they get smartER with beer:)
No, I didn't have an island for dinner, thanks for giving me opportunity to clarify:) Not sure if I spelt it correctly but it definitely didn't have an earthy flavour!
