Vodka wine and Smoked Water

I love vodka, just plain vodka. I was little shocked to read that Absolut has created a vodka wine fusion. Absolut Tune is made from vodka and bubbly New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Apparently it looks like Champagne and it is even packed in a Champagne-shaped bottle.

I would love to try this but I definitely don’t approve of it. I think its sacrilege to interfere with the pure taste of vodka and wine, unless it is some inferior quality stuff. Having said that, Van Gogh Peanut Butter & Jelly Vodka makes  Absolut Tune sound good.

The latest dining craze – smoked water. Are you as shocked as I am?

Heston Blumenthal asked Anglesey Sea Salt to create smoked water for his restaurant The Fat Duck. The smoking process takes four days in an oak smoker. “The Fat Duck use it in their cooking as far as I know, to add smoky flavour to potatoes or seafood” according to David Lea-Wilson of Anglesey Sea Salt.

Apparently food manufacturers are also excited by this product since artificial smoke flavouring is being phased out. And this will reduce one of the headaches for mixologists. They presently use smoke guns which can set of smoke detectors.

So it seems the industry is quite excited by this innovation. I feel sorry for the environmentalists. They are already battling the bottled water industry, and now the industry has taken a step further. You take water, smoke it for four days and then use it for cooking. Amazing.

  2. I'd imagine it's quite hard starting those worldwide trends in food as so much has been done already so something like smoked water is quite a novelty!

  3. Ah, all settled and back in action I see.
Yup, I'm a pure, unadulterated vodka advocate as well. I don't mind those cassis, peach and whatnot-flavored ones but if I had a choice, I'd still go for vodka vodka :) How about smoked vodka?

    1. Slowly getting back in action:)
Smoked vodka sounds like a great idea, far more appealing than flavoured vodka, or smoked water. You should try making some! Smoky whisky is brilliant, so should be vodka.

  4. Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! (sorry, this is of course my reaction to the first horrible vodka mixture...). I could have expected they might try something awful because the only time I was offered a bottle of raspberry aromatised Absolut vodka I had to throw it away. The taste was so strong and so disgusting, I have spoiled several cocktails before deciding to get rid of it. I still remember I like their blackcurrant vodka many years ago, have they changed the recipe???
I love HB's smoked water idea. How I missed your fascinating food discoveries! I feel wiser again too :-)

    1. I think I tried raspberry vodka, not very pleasant. Also tried a few others from Absolut, some of them Absolutely horrible:) I don't know about blackcurrent vodka, whether they have changed their recipe or not.

  5. PB and Jelly Vodka? Ugh. And smoked water sounds almost as awful! But I DO love that Twix cake :)
