Palcohol and Coca Cola Brownie

Coca Cola Brownie

Recently I came into possession of a 1.5 litre bottle of Coke Zero. I don’t buy coke, so I thought of cooking with it to help use it up.  I came across a very interesting, unusual and simple Coca Cola Brownie recipe. Coca Cola is the only liquid used in the recipe, no eggs and butter is used.

The brownie turned out better than I expected. The flavor and texture is nice. It seems the recipe might be temperamental, depending on the type of Coca Cola used. The recipe is available here.

If I was to buy coke I would choose the regular sugar version and gain some calories rather than the zero version that contains artificial sweeteners. The artificial sweeteners being used has received criticism, and it is even banned in some countries. The bad news, for me, is that I still have a litre left. I plan to make pulled pork, which will use a fraction.

Palcohol is one of the most interesting food innovations. It is alcohol in powdered form. You can think of it as the adult version of powdered soup. Just add water and its ready to go.

The website lists many benefits. It is lighter and less bulky than liquid alcohol, hence cheaper to ship. This can save fuel cost for airlines. And an ice cream company wants to put it in their ice cream. No, its not McDonalds, though it would certainly make kids happy.

Palcohol, even though it is not on the market yet, has attracted criticism. Questions have been raised about persons getting drunk by snorting it. Or sneaking alcohol into stadiums, theatres and schools.

The website does not way when Palcohol will be available. Personally, I can’t wait to try it.

KFC's Chicken Corsage and Peanut Oat Cookies

Peanut Oat Cookies

These cookies are light and crispy, with added crunch from peanuts. Whole or chopped peanuts are used instead of peanut butter, which gives it a distinct crunch and a stronger peanut flavor. The recipe is available here.

A chicken corsage? This is weird but true. It is not April fools day.

The girl looks happy, sort of. We can safely assume that she is not a vegetarian. And the guy must have a hard time trying to look into her eyes, and get his attention away from the fried chicken.

KFC’s fried chicken corsage, an edible fashion accessory, features one golden drumstick along with a wreath of sweet-smelling baby's breath flowers. KFC suggests that its crispy 'Chicken Corsage' should be used by high school students to ask their sweetheart to prom. 'Love can be awkward,' it states in its YouTube video description. 'Make it less awkward by surprising your date with a corsage that will make her eyes light up and her mouth water.'

The corsage costs $20. And it gets better. The chicken drumstick is not included but each order comes with a $5 KFC gift receipt.

What is surprising is that almost 40 have been sold already.  Only 100 limited-edition chicken corsages are available.

It takes a genius to come up with such innovative ideas. Einstein's reputation as one of the leading geniuses is now being challenged.

Piadina and Dining Etiquette Around the World

Piadina

Before I come across this recipe I didn’t know that Italians also had flatbread. Piadina or piada is a thin Italian flatbread, typically prepared in the Romagna region (Forlì-Cesena, Ravenna and Rimini). It is usually made with white flour, lard or olive oil, salt and water (source: wikipedia).

The recipe is quite simple and basic, and easy to prepare and eat! I made extras and froze them. The recipe is available here.

Stick blueberry cake and beer BBQ

Stick blueberry cake (pudding)

The color is all natural. The cake is made from blueberry jam and the jam is thoroughly mixed in the batter, hence giving the uniform color. Blueberry is considered a health food, so perhaps you can have an extra slice without guilt. The recipe is available here.

Research suggests that basting meat in beer before grilling reduces the chance of potentially cancerous chemicals being formed during cooking.

Researchers marinated pork for four hours in three different types of beer - lager, non-alcoholic lager and a black beer. The meat was then cooked to well done on a charcoal grill. The results found that all of the beers reduced the levels of eight types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), a chemical linked with cancer which forms when meat is cooked at very high temperatures.

The black beer proved most effective, cutting the levels by more than half, the researchers said. The non-alcoholic beer was the least effective, although it did still reduce levels.

This is a very useful tip. I wonder if drinking beer as well helps reduce cancer risk more.
