Potatoes, soy beans and capsicum with yogurt curry sauce
Today's Food Diary
Breakfast: Rolled oats with sultanas
Lunch: Potatoes, soy beans and capsicum with yogurt curry sauce
Dinner: Potato dumplings and broccoli with sweet and tangy tomato broth
Baking/sweets: Small amount - combinations with rolled oats – quick sugar fixes!

Lunch was creamy, without cream, and comforting. Perfect for a cold winter day. Yogurt sauce is a great low fat and nutritionally superior alternative to cream. We need fat for fuel and luckily soy beans came to the rescue.

The dish I had for dinner was a ‘brave’ combination. Potato dumplings, broccoli and tomato broth are great on its own but I wondered whether they make a harmonious team. It was certainly acceptable for potato dumpling and broccoli to share the same plate but perhaps not the same spoon! The contrast between the mild tasting dumplings and stronger tasting broccoli was too much, perhaps it would have been better if cauliflower was invited to the party. Having said that the dish was delicious, nutritionally ‘sound’ and served its purpose quite well.

An interesting article about the earliest known wine making equipment recently discovered in Armenia. The complete wine making equipment is estimated to be around 6,000 years old. In the same area where the wine making equipment was discovered, the oldest known leather shoe was found, estimated at around 5,500 years old. This confirms that our earlier generations did get their priorities right: wine first, shoe later. The priorities still remain with many of us today: money for booze first, other necessities later!

Armenia is not known for its wine but their ‘cognac’ is well known, considered one of the best produced in any of the former Soviet Republics. I haven't tried it but I have tried cognac from Kyrgyzstan, also considered one of the best produced in any of the former Soviet Republics, and its fairly decent. The one coming out of Armenia should be at least as good. If you come across it, do try it, you might be pleasantly surprised.
