Triple chocolate, dried sourdough and charlem

Rice with pasta sauce and pickled herrings
Today's Food Diary
Breakfast: Rolled oats with kiwifruit and linseeds
Lunch: Rice with pasta sauce and pickled herrings
Dinner: Muesli
Baking/sweets: none

My day started with breakfast and ended with breakfast food. Have you realized that breakfast comes from two words – break and fast? Breakfast is the meal you have to break the fast since the previous meal is generally consumed the day earlier, and there is a gap of many hours. Some of my friends and family like to fast every now and then whereas I fast everyday:) The difference is that I fast in my sleep so I don't feel the pain unless I wake up in the middle of the night, and the fast goes pretty fast.

chocolate & zucchini has an excellent tip for dehydrating sourdough starter. And the procedure is quite simple, spread thinly on baking sheet, let it dry naturally and store in an airtight container in a cool place. Cool tip! Not only does this remove the need to constantly feed your starter, it becomes easier to transport it.

In the past I have starved my starter for up to 2 weeks, and they survived. I didn’t try starving them for longer. With this dehydrating tip there is no need to test the starters hunger endurance.

Today's Random Rambling – Charlem is Coming
Looks like the wait will finally be over – vegetarian meat is coming. Scientific American has published an article titled “South Carolina scientist works to grow meat in lab”. Over the past decade Dr. Mironov has been working to grow meat at the Medical University of South Carolina. Affectionately called charlem (“Charleston engineered meat”), Dr. Mironov is expecting charlem to become cheaper than meat when his factory starts operating. However for now the team is facing difficulty raising funds to continue with research.

Few days ago I wrote a paragraph about the USDA being asked to decide if organic means outdoors. While deciding what is organic is a very tricky issue, for the USDA it is good ‘warm up’ for the bigger issues on its way. Will charlem be classified as meat? Chemical? Hybrid? Sold at supermarkets and butcheries or in pharmacies?

Note: vegetarian meat is a term I coined, it is perhaps inaccurate to call it vegetarian meat.

  1. I'm not a big fan of fasting unless it involves sleep. Breakfast for dinner on the other hand? I love.

  2. European museli is good morning, noon and night. Too bad the American version isn't as good as the original.
