Bill Clinton Turns Vegan and Cotton Soft Japanese Cheesecake

Sautéed lentils and potato with tomato salsa
Food Diary (August 19, 2011)
Breakfast: Rolled oats with nectarine, sunflower seeds and flax seeds
Lunch: Sautéed lentils and potato with tomato salsa
Dinner: Tomato soup with sourdough croutons, oat molasses sourdough toast
Baking/sweets: Muesli sweets (small amount!)

In my backyard there are a few apple, pear and plum trees. The apples and plums are just starting to get ripe. I love plums and this afternoon I grabbed a few from the tree. I already started thinking of ways to bake with them even before tasting them. My excitement was short lived, the plums were not suitable for those who don’t enjoy fresh bugs. Sorry vegetarians! Each and every one of the plums had an unwelcome visitor hiding inside.

All the fruits in the backyard are organic but that’s not of much use if I can’t eat them. This made me appreciate pesticides, a little bit anyway. Given the choice I would rather eat a non-organic plum than eat no plums at all. The amount of pesticides on fruits is negligible and unlikely to cause damage to your health. You can read more here.

Bill Clinton, known for his obsession with heavy burgers and barbecue amongst other things, now claims to be vegan. He has turned his diet around and now enjoys vegetables, fruits and beans. Better late than never I suppose. Its rather tempting to slip in a joke but I suppose this is not the right forum for it!

  1. i'm so envious of your fruit trees. how i wish i had some too! i've read that pesticides can be removed from fruits/veg by soaking them in a vinegar/ water solution for a few mins. be sure to give them a good rinse before eating though.

  6. I have heard this thing about pesticides hundreds of times repeated by scientists and doctors. People are so convinced that organic is the best, they would rather eat vegetables and fruit full of toxic, but organic stuff (for example I read a very interesting article about the use of copper: huge amounts are authorised on organic farms and they can be much more dangerous to humans than small amounts of pesticides). I don't even approach the organic stall at my farmers' market: they have certainly the certificate, but their produce is flawless and the vegetables are huge; they must use lots of copper or other authorised stuff.
What I appreciate is called in France "agriculture raisonnée", which means the farmer puts chemical stuff only when it's absolutely necessary, but tries to be as natural as possible, keeping the balance between the healthy side, the taste and the quality. Unfortunately there is no label or certificate, so such farms are not as popular as organic. Most high quality French wines are produced this way. (Organic wines are very ordinary in the terms of taste and sophistication).

  8. peachie: I didn’t hear about soaking in vinegar/ water solution for a few mins. Interesting.

yummychunklet: good to know that the daughter is having a positive influence

Caroline: sorry for triggering your ‘sweet tooth’:)

    Elaine: thank you!

Junia: it seems to be a trend, more and more people are turning vegetarian/vegan. I would love to see some statistics on this

Sissi: I didn’t know about the use of copper. I suppose this will start to come out more in the open soon. Well they reduced the use of pesticides but then brought in something which is probably much worse! This is crazy. The "agriculture raisonnée" concept seems more honest, at least they are not trying to hide anything.
