Drink more milk and less beer

Pasta and pickled herring
Food Diary (September 24, 2011)
Breakfast: Flax seed sourdough toast with peanut butter
Lunch: Pasta and pickled herring
Baking/sweets:

When I think of French onion soup, I get an image of soup topped with lots of cheese and soggy bread. In reality, and fortunately, it is not like that. My mental picture of the soup is incorrect. The croutons are crispy, it is not loaded with cheese and the soup is really delicious.

And for some strange reason I always thought French onion soup was tedious to make, hence I have been avoiding it. I just discovered, on the contrary, it is quite easy to make and requires just a few basic ingredients. However it is time consuming with total cooking time of about an hour and 15 minutes. It is well worth the wait and I certainly will be making this again. The recipe is available here.

In yesterdays post I talked about slaughter free milk and today the message is ‘drink more milk and drink less beer! Confused? That’s the message from the Bolivian government, not me.

In Bolivia beer consumption is rising by 10 percent a year while milk consumption is stable. Bolivians drink 30 liters of milk a year and 35 liters of beer.

Teresa Morales the Productive Development Minister is backing a bill that imposes a small tax on beer to finance promotion of milk's benefits. Other alcoholic beverages will also be subject to the new tax.

I wonder how much research was done as part of doing the feasibility. Milk is good but there are downsides as well. In China for example 90% of the population is lactose intolerant. Beer is moderation is good, in excess its bad. Maybe the same goes for milk.

And I also wonder whether this will work. People who drink beer will not be discouraged by a small tax, and are perhaps unlikely to switch to milk. Beer and milk is not complementary products.

  2. i love french onion soup! I think encouraging milk consumption is good for the bones, especially when comparing it to beer or soda. Hopefully bolivians won't see a rise in steatosis or cirrhosis with the increase in beer consumption!

  3. Going to check out the french onion soup in a minute .... love that.
Well, over here the taxes on what they term as 'sinful' products (alcohol and cigarettes) have been rising each year and that didn't seem to stop people from using them. When you gotta have it, you gotta have it!.. esp if it's an addiction for some.

  8. Some people are lactose intolerant...some wheat...did these intolerances exist 50 years back? Or is too much abundnce of everything that is making people intolerant...by the way, is anyone intolerant to alcohol? Never heard of that :-)

Love the quinoa cakes...I am just starting to use more quinoa in my diet...really nice and a great texture...

  10. Junia: quinoa cakes do look delish, I would love to try

Laural: try discussing that with the Bolivians and other beer drinkers, over a glass of milk of course:)

ping: taxes don’t seem to stop drinking. People drink to celebrate and to drown their sorrows, its for all occasional unlike milk:)

Sylvia: it is quite versatile, with a bit of an acquired taste

Sissi: you must have been hungry to have eaten the vowels – a and e:)

    Yummychunklet: they do

Shilpa: I don’t know if these intolerances exist 50 years back. If the answer is no, its probably because of lifestyle or too much abundance as you say. Know of very few people intolerant/allergic to alcohol. Feel sorry for them!

Angsarap: exactly, its not that bad there

  11. Mmm herring pasta salad. I would have never thought to combine the two, but then again I eat herring with cheese, or apple salad. And good work on attempting your first French onion soup, nice isn't it?
