Life for certain prisoners in Texas just got a little harder. In order to cut food costs thousands of prisoners are being served two meals a day during weekends instead of the usual three meals. The first meal is served between 5am and 7 am, followed by the second meal between 4pm and 6:30 pm.

Cutting down the number of meals isn’t the only cost cutting measure. Powdered milk has replaced carton milk while burgers and hotdogs are served with sliced bread instead of hamburger and hot dog buns. To me serving a different type of milk and bread does not sound unreasonable but there have been complaints already. What can we say?

  1. i can't even imagine eating only two meals a day. but then i remember how the rest of the world eats so little in comparison to what i have access to. sigh~ the reality of poverty.

  2. There's a hidden nyonya in you somewhere. Braised pork sounds yum!
What are the prisoners complaining about? They have a roof over their heads and food to eat. In some parts of the world, people have no roof and no food ... free, yes, but ... which is worse?

  4. I just want to add that in some European countries prisons' food budget is higher than hospitals' food budget (these are official statistics, not a journalistic rumours). It sounds incredible, I know.
The braised pork looks fantastic! I love braised spareribs (I have found the recipe in a Chinese cookery book and since then it's the only way I prepare spareribs).

  8. Sonia: thank you

Junia: we are used to three meals a day but if we cut down we will get used to two meals a day. In the case of the prisoners, they have no choice

ping: A hidden nyonya in me? Thanks for the kind words:) Prisoners are humans, they like to complain! Some of them may not have three meals a day, burger with proper buns, milk from carton and a roof over their head when they get out but they will still complain.

    Lorraine: it was definitely dinner!

Sissi: I was not aware that prison food budget was higher than hospitals' food budget but I am not surprised at all. No wonder people try to avoid going to hospitals and when they are there they try to get out as soon as possible! I see programs to improve food in hospitals, civil service etc but not in prisons – probably because they have good food already.

    Yummychunklet: it does

Elaine: thank you, it was tasty.

    Parsley Sage: good philosophy
