Thanksgiving turkeys can’t have sex because their breasts are too big. Seriously, this is not a joke.

According to the article, and this is not my opinion, apparently Americans' have an appetite for gigantic breasts (we are still referring to turkeys here). As such the modern turkey has been bred to develop large breasts. And large breasts “physically gets in the way when the male and the female try to create offspring," says Julie Long of the USDA. As a result almost 100 percent of Thanksgiving turkeys are the product of artificial insemination.

So in the turkey world big breasts are a hindrance to activities that result in offsprings. I wonder if the same can be said for other animals, such as chicken.

  3. Or ...?
It must be difficult for those turkeys to walk around. I mean, if their breasts are so large, their balance would be quite affected. I wonder if having a specially made bra would help? Just wondering ...

  5. I know. You understand why I haven't had turkey for years? It's scary isn't it? I was scared when I read about it for the first time.
In Europe, if turkeys are not genetically modified (maybe they are too), they are packed with growth-encouraging drugs because they are able to grow very quickly.

  6. I'm sorry, I must correct my comment: I have just checked and it's been only almost a year I haven't had turkey (not "years"!), but it felt as the whole eternity! (Before I used to have turkey quite often, mainly turkey breast). I substituted even turkey roast with either pork roast or tiny chicken breast roast.

    Lorraine: poor turkeys indeed

ping: or ducks?:) A bra for turkeys – that’s very creative thinking!

Parsley Sage: maybe, the year is not over yet!

    Lizzy: a peaceful Thanksgiving:)

Sissi: now I understand. I didn’t realize the situation was that bad in the turkey world. I don’t know how turkeys in Europe are bred, maybe similar to chicken with growth boosting breeding methods.
One year can feel like eternity sometime:)
