Since it’s the end of the week I thought I would present research findings which I am sure many of you will appreciate, probably had been secretly hoping for, or probably followed already in secret.

An Israeli study has suggested that adding dessert foods such as cakes, cookies or chocolate to a balanced breakfast meal would help control cravings, hence assisting in weight loss dieting.

Over 32 weeks, one hundred and ninety three clinically obese, non-diabetic adults were randomly assigned to one of two diet groups with identical caloric intake — the men consumed 1600 calories per day and the women 1400. The first group was given a low carbohydrate diet including a small 300 calorie breakfast, and the second was given a 600 calorie breakfast high in protein and carbohydrates, always including a dessert item such as chocolate, cake or a cookie.

Although the participants consumed the same daily amount of calories, the participants in the low carbohydrate diet group had less satisfaction, and felt that they were not full, noting that their cravings for sugars and carbohydrates were more intense and eventually caused them to cheat on the diet plan. However, she added that the group that consumed a bigger breakfast, including dessert, experienced few if any cravings for these foods later in the day.”

Dr Jakubowicz, the team leader for this research said that “A meal in the morning provides energy for the day’s tasks, aids in brain functioning, and kick-starts the body’s metabolism, making it crucial for weight loss and maintenance. Breakfast is also the meal that most successfully regulates gherlin, the hormone that increases hunger.”

This study makes sense to me. Sometime ago research showed that those eating full English breakfast had lower cravings for fat and sugar during the day, hence while more calories are consumed in the mornings, less is consumed during the day. Also eating the full English breakfast increased the body’s metabolism.

  1. Ah so, that's what I've been doing wrong all this time! I've been having dessert all 3 meals a day! Dang! Yup, you were right, definitely a research well worth all that research funds.
The cupcakes are so very pretty!

  2. Interesting research, they say it's bad to have sweets at night so maybe there's something to it. I might test it out and report back! ;-)

    1. I guess, because it affects sleeping and tooth rot?
Yes, testing is the only way to find out:)

  3. This is very interesting. I have always felt less cravings when I had a high-protein breakfast (miso soup with tofu is a good example) and while it's quickly filling for me sweet cakes or croissants or bread with jam makes me always feel hungry. On the other hand I have always known sugar helps to concentrate... The study sounds very convincing. Maybe a bit of dark chocolate added to a morning healthy meal would do the trick?

    1. I didn't notice sugar helping me to concentrate.
Same for me, when I eat just sweets my hunger increases a lot. I guess its empty carbs but when eaten as part of a meal it could/should be different.

  4. It's definitely true that if I totally deprive myself of dessert, I end up craving it more and binging later on things that don't even taste that good! But if I just have ONE cupcake, I can keep it to one cupcake. Which I think is better for me in the long run!

  7. haha very interesting research. I'm not sure about sugary dessert necesarily, but I do know carbs help me feel more satisfied. if i try to limit my carbs I just end up craving more!
