Bad news for ice cream lovers, or good news, depending on how you look at it.

A study from the Oregon Research Institute found that found junk food and high fat and sugary foods can become addictive when eaten on a regular basis. The study, involving 151 teenagers, found that when ice cream was eaten to excess, the chemicals in the food tampered with the brain's reward response, reducing the ‘feel good’ boost, making them want more.

While researchers added that it is unlikely to develop a full-blown addiction to ice cream, they believe that ice cream has addictive properties.

  1. Guess that's what they call a "sugar high".
Guess I'll never get the privilege of that feeling since I'm not into overly sweet stuff or too much of it.
That title for the cherry cake doesn't do it justice ... it's so beautiful!

    1. I guess so, once on a high, you want to stay there.
You face low or zero risk of addiction, which is not a bad thing.

  2. I have to agree with Ping. I have teenagers and if I keep sugar snacks in the house, including ice cream - they'll eat those before anything healthy.
So I prefer not to buy any of it - goal is to limit sugar intake in my family. Good post!

  3. Don't think this is some magical property unique to ice cream, I must say!

  4. I think anything sugary is boudn to be addictive after a while. moderation is key but heh, having it there just makes it all the more diffiult to resist.

  5. Haha! At first I was sure it was a photo of chips (or French fries) with ketchup ;-) I think I haven't had them for ages and crave them... Anyway, it looks delicious.
Reading the article I start thinking if it's not dangerous to have the best Italian ice-cream maker of the city just at a walking distance from my house... Luckily I'm not a huge fan of bought ice-cream. They are always too sweet for me, so I couldn't have them as often as home-made ice-cream, which I don't make because I don't have an ice-cream maker and my freezer is too small to put it there... (it's always packed). So until I buy an ice-cream maker+a big freezer I'm safe from this addiction I hope ;-)

    1. Its mock fries:) Now that you mention, I also haven't had fries for a while. Thinking about it makes me crave, and I wonder if they are addictive:)
Lucky that the ice cream is too sweet for your taste otherwise it could mean trouble. On the other hand if its walking distance you can get good exercise!

  6. That cake looks so wonderful. And duh, they just did a research to figure that out now? A little behind in the news. At least now I only eat my homemade ice cream so no added preservative or extra addictive ingredients.

    1. Exactly, its almost common sense but researchers need to justify their salaries:)

  7. Wow, stunning cake!

And I'm thinking French fries are as "addicting" as ice cream...I just love salt!
