Eggplant and tampons

Soya chili steamed eggplant

Soya chili steamed eggplant is an incredibly simple dish to prepare. Steam for 5-10 minutes and in the meantime mix together the ingredients for the sauce. Pour sauce over eggplant and eat. That’s all there is to it.

Eggplants are usually roasted, baked or sautéed. The thought of eating steamed eggplant may not sound very appealing to some of us. I understand. Once you get past that psychological hurdle and actually try this, what you will experience is something which is surprisingly tender, moist and sweet. And not greasy at all. The recipe is available here.

Good news, Heston Blumental has revealed an interesting palate cleanser. The idea is to soak up the juices in your mouth using a tampon. "If you drain the moisture in your mouth you experience richness, creaminess and sweetness more intensely ... and there is really nothing much more absorbent than a tampon."

The impact on the tastebuds is immediate: "If you have a spoonful of ice-cream then put a tampon on the tongue for a couple of minutes, when you eat the ice-cream again the taste will be richer. It's certainly not something I would do for culinary enjoyment purposes, but it's an interesting way to explore the taste receptors in our mouth." This palate cleanser approach would provide great entertainment too. Imagine people placing tampons on their tongue.

Unfortunately the good news ends here. Tampons will not be on his menu at Fat Duck. But that doesn’t stop you from getting creative yourself. Please don't ask me technical details on this topic:)

  1. Ehm... tampons as palate cleansers? Good lord you do find the most curious of things! Whatever is wrong with the humble bite of cracker and a sip of water? :D

I'm trying to think if I've had steamed aubergine before - perhaps not, but something to try. I love the stuff, although I have to admit I love it extra-extra-muchly when it is all salty and greasy :D

  2. Interesting way to prepare eggplant (funny I just made some). I am skeptical but would happily try it, the sesame oil is a nice touch for me. Wow what a pic. And wow tampons for dinner!

  3. I love eggplant. Steaming it is a good idea. I like pan grilled with a sambal sauce over it. Spicy!
That fish doesn't look too kinky to me ... oh wait, oh, it's "kinki" :)
A tampon?! And here I thought the Taiwanese, or was it Japanese, having a restaurant with a toilet theme was gross and tasteless ... Can't they just call it a cotton bud or something?

    1. Kinky - eyesight alright?:) Or one track mind!!! Kidding.
Those toilet theme restaurants seemed uninteresting. And there is a hospital themed restaurant in Singapore - not very interesting either.
I suspect tampons is more than just cotton buds

  4. Somehow I don't see tampon companies using this as a marketing tool. And I'm not sure I see this idea taking off - at least not in public. But I do like eggplant and I don't mind if it's steamed xx

  6. What a lovely eggplant dish! I'm so glad you have enjoyed it (I have just clicked to check if it was a similar recipe and then I saw it was the same recipe!) I am honoured to see it here.
The tampon idea.... You will laugh but what makes it scary is not the tampon itself, but the fact that it's made of cotton... It makes me shiver, like a nail scratching on an old classboard... You know what I mean?

  8. Hi Three cookies,I'm hopping over from Ping's blog.
I burst out laughing when I saw eggplant VS Tampons, LOL The toilet theme restaurant is already so weirdo especially the ice cream so unpleasant looking. :(

The quickie dish look delicious and appetizing, haven't try steaming method. Always deep fry and cook with sambal. Will try out your recipe since it's so easy. Thanks for sharing.

    Have a nice day.

  9. You are right! I try to think hard if I had any steamed eggplant dish... but I had never tried one before, and I am an eggplant lover! I can't believe I've never tried this cooking method. In Japan it's usually deep fried and dipped/marinated (this is so good!) or stir fried... pretty typical dishes. I am going to try this soon!
