“If it aint broken don’t fix it”.

ANZAC cookies is one of my favourites. I love it just the way it is and I would not want to change it. But there is sometimes the urge to change things, to try to make it better, even though the recipe has been tried and tested thousands of times. Today I just had to make one change so I introduced vanilla to the party. I don’t think vanilla made much of a difference, which probably explains why it is not in the recipe in the first place. It has nothing to do with the quality of the vanilla – I used really high quality Mexican vanilla that was sent to me as a sample. I think other flavours are too dominant and its best that they are the star of the party, not an outsider like vanilla. Lesson learnt, maybe! The recipe is available here

I remember an ad for healthy cereal targeting children that said something like “don’t mention its healthy and they will eat it by the boxful”. Now there is an ad campaign positioning carrots as junk food so consumers will eat more. Marketing is amazing, it has its pros and cons. To encourage increased consumption of a healthy food is probably not a bad thing.

The article is quite interesting. Did you know that baby carrots came about because supermarkets rejected smaller carrots. To avoid waste smaller carrots were marketed as baby carrots and these days baby carrots are considered gourmet while regular carrots are regular.

Talking about wastage, it was only a couple of years ago that EU laws were changed, allowing deformed vegetables to be sold. So cucumbers no longer have to be perfectly straight and tomatoes no longer have to be perfectly round to make an appearance in supermarkets. Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it.

  3. I didn't know that about carrots! I know organic companies would put conventional carrots into organic labeled bags prior to regulations on organic labeling via usda!

  5. I never think of vanilla as a bad addition, but you may be right about it getting lost amongst the other flavors. You live and you learn!

    That salmon pie sounds fabulous!
