Ramen Noodles, Chocolate Stout Cake and Americus

Chicken in tomato sauce with pasta
Food Diary (June 07, 2011)
Breakfast: Rolled oats with banana, sunflower seeds and flax seeds
Lunch: Chicken in tomato sauce with pasta
Dinner: Beef and black pepper ramen noodles
Baking/sweets: Oat sweets

The beef and black pepper ramen noodles was satisfying. The broth was delicious, even though it was slightly ‘muddy’ and the flavours were obviously 'steroid injected' ala flavour enhancer. Other factors made up for the broths lack of depth. The pepper flavor was mild, only just lingering in the background. I would have preferred a slightly stronger peppery flavor but that’s just personal preference, and not directed as a criticism to the fine bowl of noodles. Considering it was a 3-minute noodle I was not expected the same performance that the real deal delivers. The 3-minute noodles were nice, it was ready in 3 minutes and thats all I wanted to have for dinner.

We are used to seeing “Made in China” labels. In an interesting turn of events, Made in USA chopsticks are appearing in Asia. The chopsticks are produced by Georgia Chopsticks in a small town aptly called Americus. Georgia Chopsticks is already producing two million chopsticks per day and expects to increase production to ten million per day. Thats equal to around 3.7 billion chopsticks per year. .

Americus has the ideal type of wood for making chopsticks. The poplar tree and sweet gum trees provide the right balance of hardness and softness for producing chopsticks.

There has been a lot of outcry as US based businesses outsourced production, including big ticket items, to China. However I don't think there will be a similar reaction from Asians as US starts to dominate global supply of chop sticks!

  1. I'm not a big fan of dessert but I'll make an exception for this cake as I love stout, warm in winter and icy cold in summer :) :)

  6. The pasta looks great! I think I'll have penne tonight too!
The stout cake reminds me of a Guinness Gingerbread with a chocolate frosting I've been making for some time and which is one of the best cakes I have ever had my life! And there's always half a pint of Guinness to finish ;-)
Reading your ramen experience I see I am not the only one who thinks that a good ramen bowl is not as easy to make as it looks! (I'm still experimenting and there is always something wrong...).
