Baking/sweets:

The weather during the past few days has been terrible. My weekend plans to sit by the water, cold beverage in one hand food in another now has to be delayed. Summer only comes once a year for a few months, unfortunately rain manages to sneak in every now and then, like an unwelcome guest at a party.

Previously I lived in a country without four distinct seasons. There were two seasons – hot and dry, or hot/cool and rainy, never cold.  A hot sunny day was a day to avoid being outdoors since you would be drenching in sweat if you went outside. Now it is the opposite, a hot sunny day is a glorious day, available in limited quantities, and to be spent outdoors as much as possible. This really shows how value increases when we have less of something. When people say it would be nice to live in a country with year around summer I gently remind them of the reality.

Same for food. Previously after pretty much every night out I would stuff myself to the brim with burgers and kebabs. These dining experiences were best enjoyed with a certain 'state of mind'. Now with a long break from burgers and kebabs, they are starting to sound really really appealing to the extent that I am almost missing them. I could easily really enjoy them for lunch. I cracked the secret to appreciating and enjoying burgers and kebabs.

Not all food innovations are exciting. A Japanese scientist has made a burger by extracting protein from human faeces (poop) and mixing with soya and steak sauce. The American influenced Japanese burger is probably not the kind of fusion food that would make many of us jump up and down with excitement, even if its given out for free. Tastes and preferences aside, this certainly demonstrate innovation and creatively, though perhaps it could have been better used in other areas. Maybe the human protein extract can be fed to animals as animal feed? I wonder if the scientist tasted it. I wonder where the raw ingredients were sourced from. I have many other questions in mind but its best left in the mind!

Some scientists seem to have access to more than enough funding, and have a lot of spare time on their hands. I read yesterday on Reuters  that Chinese scientists produced a herd of genetically modified cows that produces milk which is 80% the same as human breast milk. I thought it was strange until I read about the poop burger.

Maris: the more I look at it the more I want to taste it
ping: Great idea. The Japanese scientist might be interested in collaborating with creative minds. Interested?:)
Junia: not really a break, just reduced consumption. Vege burgers and kebabs – I would prefer the real thing:)

  6. I also have a very rainy weekend here... I haven't gone to my Saturday market today :-(
I love burgers, but since I made my first burgers at home (with the meat I have chosen myself and ground myself), all the burgers seem awful! I make my burgers with flank steak, which is very cheap in Switzerland and perfect for burgers, patties etc.
Kebabs is another story... I loved them before coming to Switzerland. Here all the kebabs are bland and really disgusting. I think that people who make them adapt them to the local taste: the Swiss don't like food which is full of spices... (You would never guess in which country I have had the best kebabs in the world, and not once but several times in different bars!). Maybe it's better for me: after having tasted several kebabs here I stopped eating them a couple of years ago.

  7. OMG, that is just so completely gross about the burger. I guess people really will eat anything! IN my book, anyone who wants to eat a poo burger totally deserves one LOL.
