Five degrees of vegetarianism

What is a vegetarian? A friend of mine is a vegetarian who eats eggs but I thought an egg is almost a chicken, wait a few days and it will become one. Balut, those duck eggs available in some Asian countries are almost half way there. Then there are vegetarians that eat fish. I saw a TV program where a woman was a pescetarian who ‘reserved the right to eat bacon’ – probably because she loves bacon too much to let go. I suppose I can call myself a vegetarian or pescetarian and I eat fish and meat when I feel like! Anyway Care2 has an article the five degrees of vegetarianism.

Flexitarian
A fairly new concept referring to someone who leads a semi-vegetarian lifestyle, consuming mostly plants, dairy and eggs, but on occasion also eats meat and fish. Some flexitarians choose to only eat meat that they feel is ethically sourced. Other flexitarians will eat meat when it is served to them or for social reasons, but choose to not to buy meat or other dairy products.

Pescetarian
Another fairly new term, a pescetarian is someone who eats seafood, but not any other meats. Pesce is the Italian word for fish.

Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian
This is probably the most common form of vegetarianism. Lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat meat, but will eat other animal products, specifically eggs and dairy. “Lacto” comes from the Latin term for milk, and “ovo” from the Latin word for egg.

Vegan
A vegan diet is entirely plant-based and contains no animal products, like eggs and dairy. Some also do not eat honey or gelatin. Many vegans also do not use animal products in other parts of their lives, and do not purchase products make with leather or fur.

Raw Vegan
Not all “raw foodies” are vegans, but many choose to abstain from any animal products. A raw food diet has no foods that are cooked above a certain temperature, and also excludes all pre-processed foods. A raw vegan diet is very low in fat and calories and is very high in fiber, so many people on this diet turn to juicing at home. Juicing allows them to consume food that is densely nutritious and uncooked, and helps them get enough calories for the day. Many raw vegans consider the use of dehydrators to be an acceptable means of preparing foods.

  1. Morning! Great round up of all the non-meat eating diets... My Mum is Pescetarian, has been for about 10 years now. I think I am mostly Flexitarian with an ethical source of meet point of view... Having said that I love chorizo and your dish with ajvar! Did you make ajvar yourself? And unfortunately I have little idea of where my chorizo comes from :-(

    Gosh, I didn't know there were so many "-arians" around. I know one I dubbed a "peskytarian" who kept bugging me about my being a meatarian ... nag nag nag.

  3. ahhh yes, there are 5 levels of vegs! i think i am in between vegan and raw vegan - or i call myself "high raw". :) i do eat honey every once in awhile, since my stomach can't handle maple syrup any longer. i don't think i'd ever become all raw vegan though! i like my baked goods. :)

  4. If I become a vegetarian I will choose to be a Pescetarian, I can live without pork and beef but not without seafood.

    angsarap: I could do that also though I like meat once in a while

    Sissi: thats an interesting one - eating two legged meat only. What about a limping lamb for example with two good legs only?:) Does kangaroo and rabbit have 2 or 4 legs?
